Auvergne is a largely mountainous region of central France. It is divided into four departments: Allier; Puy de Dome; Cantal and Haute Loire. Staying at the apparthotel Auvergne you have the opportunity to explore all this historic region has to offer. The capital, Clermond Ferrand, is an historic town featuring a gothic cathedral. It lies in the shadow of an ancient volcano, the inspiration for the nearby theme park, Vulcania, which offers a variety of rides as well as an IMAX cinema. The area's volcanic mountains also account for the mineral water for which the area is famed - most notably the Volvic brand. Also in the Puy de Dome department is Puy de Sancy, the highest peak in central France. In the summer you can climb the mountain or ride to the top by cable car and in winter the mountain is a popular choice for skiing and snowboarding. In the Allier department you can find the charming spa town of Vichy, which was the capital of Vichy France during World War Two. If you enjoy visiting religious sites then why not visit the old city of Le Puy en Velay, with its 10th century chapel St. Michel de l'Aiguilhe, which is accessed by 268 steps. Also in the Haute Loire department you will find a scenic railway running between Dunieres and St. Agreve, which occasionally operates steam engines - a treat for any steam enthusiasts.
