Midi-Pyrénées : The last frontier before Spain, the Midi-Pyrenees region is dominated by the mountains that form its name. With villages clinging to cliffsides, wide plains and sprawling vineyards, the area has plenty to offer if you are staying in apparthotel Midi-Pyrénées. Lying on the River Garonne, Toulouse is the heart of the Midi-Pyrenees. Be sure to take in the World Heritage Site of the Canal du Midi if you visit the city. You could also take in the waters in the spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon. If you are keen to take in historical sites in Midi-Pyrenees, Montségur is a good place to start. Perched on a mountain top, Montségur castle is a fortification dating from Cathar times. Cordes-sur-Ciel is another great place for a vist if you are interested in the region's history. Albi, the historical capital of the Tarn department, is also a fascinating glimpse into an older world. Besides the numerous rivers and plains, the mountains are perfect for hiking and exploring. Stargazers and mountain climbers alike might want to see the observatory at the Pic du Midi, but if you are after something equally awe-inspiring, head to the far north of the region, where you will find the beautiful town of Rocamadour. Attracting both sight-seers and pilgrims over the years, Rocamadour is a perfect gateway for exploring the Dordogne region. Finally, no visit to Midi-Pyrenees would be complete without a trip to Lourdes. Second only to Paris as a tourist attraction, over six million people make a trip here every single year.
